As far as I know only the UGC-27 and UGC-77 (both compact 28 KSRs)  
were intended to be shifted while under full load.  It was part of  
the Navy specification.
The other fully meshed nylon gear shifters were shifted as the  
machine was shutting down after the power switch was turned off. Then  
turned back on.
On the full metal non-meshed version the motor should be turned over  
by hand while moving the selector lever.  All shifters need to be  
greased.

row to select the speed, so I'm pretty
sure that one can be changed on the fly

am thinking a web document to show the
variations and how to tell if what you're
thinking of buying will fit what you want
it to would be nice. (Sure would have saved
me a lot of mis-steps) Anyone want to
collabrate?
