Western Union and the Bell System provided the majority of  
teletypewriter service.  The majority of the services provided were  
via metallic cables and specialized carrier systems.  Not that many  
Teletype machines were used with radio transmission except in the  
military, and most of that was either Navy or Air Force.  The U.S.  
Army preferred land lines whenever they could use them.
