One of my first ideas was to run at a higher baud rate
with elongated stop forced on the TD.
However The TD I have on hand is 45 baud, and
the best gears I have on hand would only get me to 75B.
I do have two workarounds, although it would be nice
to actually use the USB dongle and laptop at 45B 7.45 code.
Work around (1) is to use the desktop with the
hardware built in. I have not done this yet but it should work.
Work around (2) is to feed the bipolar RS-232 signal
I generate from the TD into either a DC coupled FM
Modulatable RF signal generator or into the "VCO"
input of an audio function generator. I have actually
done both of these and been able to generate 170 Hz
shift FSK that I then demod and capture with MMTTY or MixW.
Now I still have to get this 28TD working right
as it has a few bits out of spec.

Les,
Well Sir, that still seems like a noble task to me! And I have a couple of off-the-wall ideas you may
want to consider ...the first and simplest, is to print them out on page printer, 15, 28, 32, whatever,
and scan them in to a PC with OCR software, I've even seen tty fonts available so you could laser
print them, and still maintain the look & feel of a "real" printer.
The second is to read the 5 level tape in an 8 level reader, 33, 35, 43, or some higher speed CNC
tape reader, then write a little program, in BASIC or C, or Shell, whatever your poison, to read a character,
bit shift, truncate as necessary and convert the string to ascii, and preserve it for posterity, .....or until the first
