Hi Lester,

Not sure if this helps, but I use a similar device from Belkin, model
F5U109, which they advertise
as a PDA accy, USB computer end, DB-9 RS-232 PDA end, and have used it
successfully
with hyperterm 8 bit ASCII down to 300 baud only. The device needed no
drivers with
Windows XP, and is full duplex/bi-directional, and internally uses an
industry standard EIA driver chip, a HIN211CA, here's the specs...

......it also uses a pic controller P87C52UBAA, that is an 8/16 bit
processor, with built in UART Baud rate generator, etc. There is some
bit level manipulation available, but there are some restrictions. You
would have to be a pretty savvy coder to pull it off, and upload the
code to the on-chip eprom, here's the specs....

All that being said, I don't believe it supports a baud rate below 110.

So I think the answer to your question, will be a flat "no" from the
manufacturer, as any of
them would have to re-write the pic code. But a hobbyist so driven,
might pull it off???

I didn't look at the original thread, so not sure what the original task
was, (printing to a tty, or using a "real" keyboard to enter text on a
PC???), but in my "Rube Goldberg-like brain", you could use one of these
devices connected @ 110 baud, to an old ASCII > BAUDOT converter to do
the 8 > 5 bit conversion, and baud rate match???

Okay, okay what the heck am I smoking...right? I'm new to the list
here, so just wanted to say hi to everybody out there, I'm sadly not a
Ham, but Vintage Computer and Teletype guy, retired from Ma Bell,
lookin' for a 35-ASR close to Detroit Mich.

I use the little Belkin adapter to upload and talk to my Altair 8800,
and it works flawlessly. But the way they market it, it seems like it
would only work with PDA's.

I do have a question, when an old-timer HAM passes beyond the
ionosphere, he becomes a "Silent Key" right? Then what happens to an
old computer guy? Does he/she become a "Silent Keyboard"? Or do they
just leave a bunch of Orphaned Mice behind?

"Just Bob!"
