This will get your hands dirty...so beware  :-)
 
Check to see the movement of the individual typepallets.  You will  probably 
find that they all move easily and that the only part of the typebox  that 
needs a cleaning is the typeface that strikes the ribbon into the paper and  
platen.
 
I've always been able to do a summary cleaning by wiping the typepallets  
with a dry rag or a paper towel and then working each typepallet one at a time  
with a pin or the end of a bent paperclip.  It's amazing how good the print  
looks after a good cleaning. Enjoy.
