Tim,
I know of what you speak. I have a M-28 typing reperf whose foam is loose
and a big bother, and some old Model 14's whose sound matting is fine and
working well.
I have a couple of suggestions:
1) to remove the gunk-ud up crud, try various solvents, starting with
kerosene (stoddards solvent, Varsol, or any parts cleaner) then move up to
brake cleaner, naptha, or whatever you have. Acetone may well take the
paint off. Be careful to test a solvent on the paint before applying much
of it.
2) For a substitute, search the hifi speaker makers supply sources. There
many materials used inside speakers that may do for you. Also, there is
available material to hang on the walls of your listening emporium to
control reflections.. this stuff might be useful.
3) If you are handy with a sewing machine, you might be able to make new
padding.. use blankets, the heaviest quilt batting you can find or whatever.
