Not knowing the situation, all I can say is that if I were the deceased,
I would appreciate someone making an effort to preserve my collection.
It is important, however, to not swoop down like vultures. Simply
saying that there are people interested in preserving the collection
should be sufficient.
One thing to be learned: we don't live forever. I identified a few
trustworthy people for my wife to contact if anything ever happens to
me. (I also told her to take over my ebay account and go to town!) Not
that I'm expecting the occasion to come up for a long time, however. ;-)
