When the Australian Post Office first imported Creed teleprinters in around
1933 the Figs S had ' and Figs J the bell.
When US forces arrived during WW11 with Teletype 15s, 19s etc they had to
interwork with the Creeds, so were modified somewhere along the way,
although the odd keytop still has the 'wrong' indication.
Apparently Teletype was aware of differing standards as keytops for either
standard look authentic.
Even today International TELEX uses S ' and J Bell, so I guess the opposite
is just another example of US and world standards being different.
Incidentally Figs F G and H in International traffic could not be used as
each country was free to allocate whatever functions they wished. Figs D was
the call for Answer-Back (Who are you) although most machines had its
function on a separate key to avoid the possibility of the A-B being
triggered if reception was accidentally in Figs.
I have an ex-Australian Army Kleinschmidt TT-4A/TG which has the American
standards, although a former Air Force model 28 has world standard with
authentic keytops. Just makes printer collecting all the more 'fun'.
