Hi guys:

Thanks for all the responses -- I got it fixed!

It seemed like the carriage was not actually locking into the LTRS
position. It fully positioned against the FIGS stop screw, but only got to
within about 1/8" of the LTRS stop screw, and was not fully on the LTRS
side of the detent. The function mechanism was trying to put it into LTRS,
but it acted like something was preventing it from moving fully into LTRS
position, or that it was not getting a full actuation of the LTRS function.

Jack mentioned that you should be able to pull the platen up or push it
down (LTRS/FIGS shift) at any time, and Jim suggested disconnecting one end
of that "tie rod" that connects the platen end of the shift mechanism
to the bottom end. Well, I disconnected the tie-rod, and found that the
platen did not move fully to LTRS, but seemed to bind on the mechanism for
moving the ribbon. Then I found a little L-shaped sliding bar to the
right-rear of the type basket. According to a manual, I think it is the
optional "ribbon lockout bar." Sliding this out solved the problem.

What does this ribbon lockout bar do in its activated position? Both of my
machines have one.

thanks,

gil
