Hi Jim:
I fixed the double-spacing problem! I found the spacing escapement
mechanism, and the rear pawl was free. Until you mentioned a second pawl,
I didn't know it was there. But after positioning the carriage at the
right side, and looking down from the front, I could see the extra
linkages. Upon comparing to my other M15, I found the offending frozen
front pawl. Thought I had freed everything up, but this pawl was
well-hidden. A bit of oil and wiggling and it loosened up -- the machine
spaces properly now.
But, I'm still baffled with the LTRS/FIGS problem. I put a good keyboard
in the unit so I could check it a bit easier. If the carriage is at the
left side, I can shift between LTRS and FIGS just fine. However, any key,
including space, will immediately shift it from LTRS to FIGS, where it
stays all the way to the end of the line.
Another odd thing, when the carriage is at the left side, I can shift
between LTRS and FIGS properly, as mentioned already. This shifting still
works fine when the carriage is positioned within about the leftmost third
of the line. However, when the carriage is positioned into about the
rightmost two-thirds of the line, it will no longer latch down in the LTRS
position. The LTRS mechanism still cycles, but the carriage returns to the
FIGS position.
I tried making sense of the mechanism, but there's a lot of stuff moving at
once. And I don't quite understand why typing a char would push the
machine into the FIGS state. Where do I look next?
Since most of this machine has had frozen parts, another one would be a
good bet. Or, is there an adjustment perhaps that could cause this behavior?
gettin' there,
gil
