Paul is correct about Autodin - just closed down relatively recently. It
was used for
so called "record" traffic or official traffic. Beginning in the 90s, most
of the autodin traffic
was replaced or taken up by email oriented traffic riding a couple of GOV
only internets or the
commercial internet. Autodin was supposed to be replaced by a system called
the Defense Messaging
System (DMS) several years back. It suffered from several delays and I am
not sure it was ever
totally deployed. Today, we use something called NIPR Net, SIPR Net, and
the Internet.

"Displaced" may not be correct. Look at the first two hits on Google
for "AUTODIN". The information there says AUTODIN was officially closed
last year (2003)! The map shows most of the worldwide switching centers
being closed from 1992 to 1999.
I had the impression the two networks had different users: AUTODIN
carried military messages such as orders for spare parts and administrative
messages, while ARPANET provided for interchange of data between defense
projects at educational institutions.
