[GreenKeys] Help needed with Model 28

Hi.  My MOdel 28 has been sitting in storage and I just got it into the shack and hooked up to my HAL ST-6.

My problem is that it is printing like a caps lock key was on or something.  it's all ((*&($)%_@)*729804)&)$&7)@(%)

instead of text.  the hal is set at 170 for the shift and it is not in reverse.  I"ve tried it both ways.  I"ve used this machine for years and never had this problem.  I figure it's something right in front of me that I'm doing wrong, but I sure can't see it at the moment.  

NOw, one thing.  When I hooked it up the small piece that has the letters in it was off, and I put it back on.  Could that have been put on wrong?
