Frank & Group,
The military test set for adjusting the 255A (and another relay called
D-164816 that I don't recall ever seeing) is the I-193-(*). I have an I-193-C here
but have never used it.
Which brings up a spin-off question. The 255A has an 8-pin base with 4 pins
in each of two parallel rows (and 4 guide/retainer pins on a square pattern).
On the I-193, besides the 255A socket, there is another socket identical to
the 8-pin one except with 10 pins. All that the TM says about it is "not
used". Anyone ever see a polar relay with a 10-pin base? There is also an octal
style socket but with 9 pins. According to the schematic, it and the 10-pin
socket are wired the same as the two 8-pin sockets except that pins 8 and 9 go
to a third winding on the relay under test.
