Here's an odd fact. The Wheatstone Bridge was invented by Charles
Wheatstone, and we tend to know him from this and his pioneering work on
telegraphy.

However, his father was a musical instrument maker, and young Wheatstone
made quite a name for himself in designing musical instruments. His most
significant contribution was the invention of the Concertina. In fact there
is a company bearing his name that still builds them

The other odd one is Almon Strowger - he who invented the automatic
telephone exchange. He was actually an undertaker in Kansas City in the
late 1800s, but found that his competitor was enjoying more new business
than he. He quickly found out that his competitor's wife was a switchboard
operator, and when a grieving relative called to be connected to the
undertaker, she would of course connect them to her husband's emporium.
This moved Strowger to invent the uniselector mechanism in order to remove
partiality from the phone system!
