Thinking i'd get my ST-6 hooked into my Yaesu FT-990 and see what
happens when i put out a CQ on a dead (more or less) 20 meter band.
Hmmmm. Things aren't what they seem.

FT-990 Patch in jack which is where the AFSK from the ST-6 or TU goes
accepts 2 MV (a 600 ohm load). This is "optimum" per the book. Now on
the other hand the st-6 has 2 AFSK outputs. WEll see tonight that mine
doesn't have either, just an FSK jack. Different indians here......

ANyway the normal ST-6 has 2 outputs. One 20MV and the other 100MV both
from or into a 600 ohm load. Therefore, the ST-6 would not be useable
without some sort of pad between the 20MV out and the 2 MV input jack
right? ANyone else have an FT-990 that they could look at the
documentation to see if it agrees with what mine says. I would think
that the 2 MV level would be way to low. Nope, I haven't tried it out
to see what it sounds like. Remember i said i don't have an AFSK output
on this unit. FSK would be the better method anyway. Don't have to
worry about the overdriving of the audio chain with that type signal and
the 990 will handle FSK type operation.

I used to run an ST-6 into my Drake T-4X mic input with no problems at
all. However, this 990 is a bird of a different breed. TO much drive
could cause all sorts of bad sounds on a transmitted signal.

ANyone else run into this situation or are you just plugging a TU into
the transmitter and letting it rip!!!!
