Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like Viton would be a good starting point. 

It would be nice if we could find out what the durometer of the original material was. Given that all the pads in existence now have converted themselves to silly putty that may be hard to do directly.

  I don't have anything newer than a 28 so don't have a clue as to dimensions.  The original material was most likely neoprene for which effective specific adhesives are available.  However, given hot oil as the operating environmental conditions, I think Viton scores highest on the Parker chart.  E6000 will bond it to steel or aluminum.  Available in several durometers, of which 70 Shore A is or used to be common.
