I think the only thing that cares a lot about the kind of sound card is
the K6STI RITTY software, which requires a genuine SoundBlaster, and
perhaps not a PCI version.  I believe the other soundcard software these
days uses a Windows sound abstraction that hides much of the detail of
individual cards.  So any card that works well with Windows should work.
Linux also uses a sound card abstraction, but fewer of the cards on the
market are supported.

I have used an early SoundBlaster 16 bit card with CD ROM attached, and a
recent SoundBlaster AWE-64 ISA card, and a ViBRA16X SoundBlaster.  This
last is a little funny with K6STI RITTY.
