An embedded linux board would be fun to play with, but my idea of an
embedded system for tty interface is to use a five dollar pic
microcontroller chip.

As for wireless links for low-speed data, we use little inexpensive 433MHz
RF modules in our remotes.  Many manufactures make similar modules on
various license-free freqs.  There are FM versions, but for most
applications the cheaper AM ones are quite good for about 100 feet.  You
can get some good AM versions for ten bucks each (rx and tx) from
radioshack.com:
