There were two types of selector systems. The Holding magnet
selector basically had the armature pushed up against the magnet face by
a cam, and if the magnet was energized, it held the aramture. The other
was the pulling magnet selector that attracted the aramture more or less
like a relay
Regarding polar relays, there were many applications where no
relay was used. The polar relay was really needed only if the machine
was working on a long wire line circuit - and these were usually POLAR,
meaning that the polarity was reversed to create the mark/space
transitions. Bottom line was the selector magnet was still an on/off
operation.
