I wouldn't be a misnomer when applied to art that was made
with an ASCII-based printer or terminal, right?  :-)  There are
scads of people who do make purely ASCII art, as I'm sure
you know.

Sure, much of the early teletype-based art was later converted 
to ASCII for use on other machines, but glyph-based art (for 
lack of a better term) goes back at least to the invention of 
the typewriter, if you want to get away from the requirement
that the artwork be machine-reproducible.  What's a better term?
"Text art"?
