Hi Matt,

Welcome aboard. I'll address a couple of your questions.

I'm assuming you don't like the way that the archives are presented on the
Mailman service. I don't consolidate all the postings into one single file.
But the mailing list is quite young, so there is only 5 months to consult.
There is a zipped text file available for each month. Just append those and
you'll get all the postings in one single file. See
http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/gps_standard/ .

Regarding GPS units, we can definitely say that the more accurate the GPS
is, the better the results will be. But it does not mean that cheaper units
will not be satisfactory to you. It all depends on the level of accuracy you
are shooting for. My statement is the following: Considering the level of
accuracy and stability stated in the article (better than 1x10^-9) this
system can produce, an automotive-grade GPS will suffice. But of course, if
you can get a hold on a "timing" grade unit for a reasonable price, don't
pass! It seems that many of the users of this standard have elected to use
the Motorola Oncore series of boards. These are no longer made, but they are
available on eBay for a reasonable price. The one I use is the Oncore GT+.
If you can get a hold on a UT+ instead, it is even better since the UT+ has
"timing" grade accuracy, as opposed to the other Oncore units that are
automotive-grade. Trimble make good units too. Over the time I have been a
user of 1PPS signals, I have read and experienced myself (see my website)
that the Garmin GPS-25/35 series has flaws and should be taken out of the
purchase list. In general, expect to pay between $20 and $50 on eBay for a
suitable GPS.

I hope the above will be helpful.

Regards,

Bert, VE2ZAZ

Hello,

My name is Matt Osborn and I intend to build the VE2ZAZ Frequency
standard.

I hate to run through all the standard new guy questions, so I'll try
the short cuts first:

Has anybody archived the previous posts from this reflector?

Are there any useful web sites (besides VE2ZAZ)?

I still need to decide on a GPS receiver. Is there an overwhelming
favorite? How about one that is overwhelmingly disliked?

Thanks for reading my post.
