Hi Rich,
I do not now the Rockwell unit, so I cannot say much about it. I invite
other users to post their comments regarding it.
Regarding the antenna connectors and cables, normally the antenna has lots
of gain (20dB +), so even if your connection is not perfect, it should work
OK. Just do your best. Have fun experimenting...
As for the firmware, there is a holdover mechanism that will make the LED
still flash every second (to indicate life), but the LED will turn amber
instead of green, so you'll know it is in holdover. The holdover kicks in
whenever the measured frequency is more than parameter H value away from
nominal frequency (26624 or 0x6800). Obviously, if the GPS stops sending the
1PPS, the firmware will revert to holdover as well. On most GPS units you
can set it so that it squelches the 1PPS if it becomes unreliable.
During startup, the system will be in Unlocked state, so the holdover does
not apply. Holdover will kick in only when in Locked state. (I have noticed
that at power up, due to transients on the 10MHz and the 1PPS, the system
may start in Holdover state. This is only temporary and it will eventually
transition to Unlocked and start the acquisition process.)
Hope this helps...
