There were gray ones and yellow ones and white ones, but they all worked
just the same...fa la..la.
The Gonset Communicator took over 2 meters in the San Fernando Valley ,
all the ARC4's and SCR522's were left in the dust. There were probably more
Gooney Birds there than anywhere in the world. W6VR made them on Main St.,
Burbank, CA.
They were cube shaped and they were found everywhere, It was the favorite
picnic table portable station. i used one from a train, from the LA River,
from Mt. Pinos,
and on the beach.
Gonset made rectangular fixed frequency models (3111/3112) for Aircraft,
144 and 220 MHz. They also made a Business Communicator (Mine is on aircraft
frequencies). The Civil Defense models were all painted yellow.
The paint around my T/R switch got so badly scraped up i had to repaint it.
My Gooney Bird was sold but i know i will see it again in heaven, it is the
only
Communicator II that is painted white.
You can see all the history at the Gonset museum and pictures are at
