I think Pi's are currently hard to find. I've been keeping an eye on their availability at this site as I haven't been able to find any for the last few months: https://rpilocator.com/. That site lists the prices for each of the pi variants they track as well. For a local reseller, you can check micro center out a bit past Ardmore, though they were out of stock when I last checked a month ago. If anyone knows of any place around South Jersey that has them in stock, I'd love to hear about it!
May be worth running with the 8266 since they're available everywhere and are relatively inexpensive. Looks like the Adafruit they mention is $10 each. Alternatively, you can get 8266's as D1 mini boards for $18 as a 6 pack (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08C7FYM5T/) or the NodeMCU version which comes with the headers pre-soldered for about $17 for a 3 pack (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081CSJV2V/).
I haven't used the Huzzah, but their product page says you'll also need a USB-serial cable. The other ESP8266's I mentioned connect to the arduino software using just a regular micro USB cable if you don't already have a USB-serial cable.

This is a kit build that is pretty neat. Click on the link for more info.
I have never attended a Tech Saturday, but would be interested in building one of these. The parts cost appear to be approx $120, but the QST article does not list the Raspberry Pi. I know nothing about Raspberry Pi.
Doesn't anyone know what the cost would be with Raspberry Pi?
