The dosimeters I had provided a link to were just for reference, there are
many models of the same design and operation made before the CD ones shown
on the page and are still made now.
Here's a new one:

Research "Pen Dosimeters" and "Quartz Fiber Electrometer"
The CD you mention on AM radios was part of the CONELRAD system created in
1951. From 1953 - 1963, all AM radios manufactured or sold within the US
required these markings by Federal Law. The marks are on 640 and 1240 KHz.
I have a Morrow CM-1 radio with an interesting modification, a red light and
a green light. Green = OK, Red = kiss your butt good-bye...
I have dug up a few photos of balloon borne Ionosondes dated 1958, the
photos may actually be a few years older. I will scan them and provide
copies to those interested. I can also send a photo of the modified "kiss
your butt good-bye" radio to those interested.
In searching the web, I find many CURRENT references to "Ionosonde" showing
pictures of Ionospheric Sounder systems going back to perhaps the 1930's or
1940's. If I could find an original manual dated from then calling the
system an "Ionosonde" rather than "Ionospheric Sounder", I will stand
corrected.
