An interesting piece of history, perhaps the confusion between the two goes
back farther than I though! When were you with NIST?

An "ionosonde", carried by a balloon, is an open framed device about the
size of a shoe-box with a transmitter, battery pack and electrically charged
copper sperical chamber about 6" across.

The name is similar to radiosonde, windsonde et cetera and very much along
the same lines of research and operation.

Sort of a remote dosimeter:

it measures ionizing radiation in the upper atmosphere and transmits the
information to a ground station.

I guess in the push to come up with condensed terminology, Ionosonde sounded
better for ionospheric sounders than "Ionosound", but the term and device
was already in use making things very confusing.
