[FPARC] MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER MEETING

I also want to add that Joe and I were up in Orlando once, and, unbeknownst
to us, the only repeater within range of our HTs at our current location was
a repeater run by Spanish-speaking hams. We were trying to make contact with
our Friend, with whom we were going to meet later that day, and were not so
kindly asked to cease transmission on that repeater because we were not
speaking Spanish. That has always left a sour taste in my mouth, and I feel
it is grossly unfair to tell others that they can't use the repeaters just
because they aren't speaking English.

As to whether they are deliberately running other hams off the repeaters by
not allowing them to break into the conversation, I can only say that when
we had to switch the SLCRA net over to the .345 because the .775 was having
problems, we unknowingly interrupted their conversation. They were very kind
to us and even joined the net (in English).

I can understand that some might feel put off when they hear a language they
don't understand, but having been, in my view, discriminated against myself
for not speaking Spanish on a repeater where speaking English was not
permitted, I would humbly ask that whatever decision is made is not based
solely on the fact that they are not speaking English, but rather, on their
conduct as amateur radio operators. Has anyone taken the time to really get
to know them and evaluate their conduct? I have heard good things about them
from the few hams who have.

And as you think about this, ask yourself how you would feel and what your
reaction would be if it was you who were told to get off the repeater
because you werent speaking the language that was approved by the repeater
trustees. I can tell you that I felt unjustly discriminated against, and I
speak the language. My perception of what I thought was the good spirit of
ham radio was altered that day. I'm sure Joe and Larry felt the same way.

God bles,
Cheryl

Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for
this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
