Well, first you need to know the frequency of the signal you are
looking for.  Without that, you are kind of lost.

Most DF equipment uses some sort of receiver; often an ordinary ham
transceiver or scanner radio will do.  So for starters, just tune the
radio to the frequency of the signal you want to find!

The antenna(s) of course needs to be appropriate for that frequency
too.  So if you only do 2-meter amateur radio foxhunting, then the
same antenna should work well enough across the 2m band.  A government
frequency would be in a different band, and you MIGHT need a different
antenna arrangement to do that.  Some DF methods use antennas that
work only over a limited range of frequencies (the "tape measure
Yagi", for example), while others can work over a wider range of
frequencies.
