 I have no record of making a TX for WY0F, ( maybe a voice ident ? ) but I
did make a MicroHunt for KC0MWM in early July... looks like 18 second TX
time and 12 seconds silence, message was "KC0MWM BALLOON" ( repeated once or
twice ) followed by "AR" before end of TX. Was this the message you heard ?
Probably about 500 Hz CW tone ?

100 miles is not so unusual, even for a measley 50 mW... horizon distance is
the limiting factor, they have been heard ( several times ) at over 400
miles...if a balloon has a good flight, ( properly inflated, etc ) they can
reach 100K feet altitude.. at that height, the horizon is 425 statute miles
away.

The theoretical maximum range of a 50 mW / 2 meter TX is over 700 miles,
but that assumes a clear signal path, and the horizon usually gets in the
way... It also assumes a receiver that can detect a 0.2 uV signal, and
regular "omni" antennas for both the TX and RX. ( and negligible feedline
losses )

Thanks for the report...

Bob S.
