Hi, I'm Bruce, VK3TJN
Here's a bit of a summary of the Melbourne (Australia) scene.
The Melbourne foxhunters have a night foxhunt on the 3rd Friday of every
month (except when it is moved for Christmas/Easter whatever). The hunt
is in fact a number of hunts (anywhere from 4 to 12)
lasting from 8pm till midnight. Supper & Scores afterwards.
Hunts can be many styles (it is up to the fox), single/multi-legged,
distance/time, band (but always 2m as well) and almost all contain a
significant on-foot component.
There are also a few highlight events over the year, such as the
Australian Foxhunting Championships held last weekend in a town called
Mt Gambier. This now has both mobile and ardf components included over
the 3 day weekend. All bands from 80m to 23cm.
My team uses a motorised rotator system (and a hand beam as backup) with
DSP audio analysis and CRO polar display. Current project is integrating
the DF system with the GPS computer mapping system using the Oziexplorer
API.
The Victorian ARDF group hold an ARDF on-foot event at least once a
month, either stand-alone or in conjuction with an orienteering event.
We have recently been experimenting with fox-or-ing on 2m as well, and
it has proved a much better introduction for orienteers.
Cheers,
Bruce
