"the heater water valve is still semi functional"

They get a build up of scale inside them.  A little bit of radiator flush
fixed several of mine.  When they get plugged up you can hear them, rushing
and popping as the water flows or at least ries to, through...  The V6s are
also notorious for blowing head gaskets at random, have the dealer check the
VIN number and make sure you got the FREE factory fix!!!!
