More detail :
Got a "doesn't work and I don't know why" HQ-100 in a trade and although
I have more than enough projects, I thought "neat !" and dug into it.
After replacing 1 bad tube, finding and fixing 3 bad/intermittent factory
cold/broken solder joints, and replacing both bad gain pots with good AB
sealed units, it plays a little. The HF oscillator works good on the two
lower bands but does not oscillate on the two higher bands. While trying
to tune it up, found that one of the 455Khz IFs had a jammed core. It now
needs a new 455 Khz IF transformer (don't ask), my mood has changed, and
I want to work on other things.
The front panel and cabinet have no extra holes or modifications, the
knobs and dials look really great. These receivers use the Q multiplier
in oscillation as a BFO and apparently one of the owners didn't like that
and added a external BFO (switch mounted on the rear chassis and coupled
onto the detector stage with a few turns. Maybe that's written up in one
of the magazine articles. Anyway, in his wiring he got a ground a little
too close to the filament wiring and bubbled the insulation on some of
the filament wiring. Not really a problem and all the filaments do work
fine. He apparently then decided the BFO was not a good idea and
partially removed it. "Other than that she's cherry". It really is a nice
looking receiver (no clock) and the Q Multiplier selectivity works great.
I can send pictures.
How about $50 plus shipping. or swap me some TCS stuff. Probably worth
twice that in parts.
