**ECOMM MESSAGE**
Indian River County ACS is at Level One Alert as of 15:00 hours Wednesday,
August 12, 2003.
Level One Alert: No Direct Threat At This TimeContinue Monitoring
EVENT INFORMATION:
** RELEASE INFORMATION FROM IRCEOC**
The large mass of storms we have been watching closely over the last 24
hours continues to move west toward the east coast of Florida. Hurricane
Hunter planes have been in the system this morning and afternoon and found a
circulation south of Nassau, Bahamas. However, winds remain light and
little storm activity is around the suspected center. Therefore, at this
time, no depression or storm has been declared. The planes are going to
remain in that area until this evening. The large mass of clouds associated
with the mid level low pressure system continues toward Florida at 20mph.
For Indian River County, we can expect 2-4 inches of rain over the next 24
hours. The rainfall will begin late tonight or very early Thursday morning.
Because of the fast movement of this system, the heavy rainfall should end
by Thursday night. Regardless if a depression forms, the entire Treasure
Coast area is going to experience heavy rain, sustained east-northeast winds
at 20-25mph with some higher gusts beginning tonight. Swimmers should
remain out of the ocean tonight and tomorrow as rip currents are going to be
strong as the mid-level low system moves over our area. Boaters should
remain in port until Friday as marine conditions are already difficult and
they will get worse. No watches or warnings are in effect for Indian River
County, but I expect a Special Marine Warning to be issued for boaters later
this evening.
One thing I should mention about this system is the increased chance of
beach erosion. Winds will be from the east-northeast for at least 2 high
tides and maybe more. With the winds over 20mph and a mid level low
pressure moving over land, there is an increased chance for rough surf and
moderate beach erosion. This entire mass will move over the peninsula, but
may weaken during the night hours.
We will have better information about the amount of rainfall tomorrow
(Thursday) morning. This will be the only advisory today unless a
depression forms later this afternoon.
