My Jupiter has a "SPOT" key, which gives you a local
(non-transmitted) sidetone sound coming out the speaker,
at the side-tone frequency that you have specified in
the setup menu. I figured that is for matching the
other person's frequency, but the manual doesn't break
it down into the baby-steps I need.

Here's the deal. Just trurn on the spot tone and match it up as close as
you
can. With RIT and XIT off, that's same frq, "Zero Beat". If you're having a

bad day, this can be difficult. The way to check it is to get as close as
you
can with RIT and XIT off, then throw in a narrow filter. If the other
station
dissapears, you missed. You don't have to be perfect and honestly, within
100 cps or so is close enough, most of the time. Closer is better though.
