[Fists] Keynotes

To those who are not on the FISTS-updates email list and did not get my
email regarding the labels on Issue 4:

The printing place omitted the street address from the labels. Since I have
"address correction requested" on the KN, most PO's kicked them back as
undeliverable. Some post offices delivered them regardless.

We didn't know the extent of the problem until about three weeks after I
mailed them (the printer swore he checked the labels and they were fine, so
we thought it might be an isolated "zip code malfunction"). By the time a
few weeks had passed, it was evident that the problem was widespread since
they were coming back to me by the hundreds.

After a week or two of me raising heck with them, the printing place
reprinted Issue 4 under the same cover as Issue 5 (at their expense) and
that was mailed about 2 weeks ago. They are not getting one more penny of
FISTS money.

I found a new printing place, which wasn't easy because the KN has to be
printed on a web press, and it is hard to convince a web press place (which
are rare in this neck of the woods anyway) to do a small run (anything under
10 or 25 thousand pieces). It can't be printed on a regular offset press
because the cost would be about four times as much as a web press run. Take
a Keynote to your local printer and get an estimate if you doubt me.

Anyway, I found another web press place and was able to convince them to
print the KN. They printed Issue 7, which was mailed Monday, and Issue 6
will be mailed next week.

I know they are out of consecutive order, but that's the way it worked out.
Issue 7 is the photopages issue, so it shouldn't make much difference,
except I'm sure it will confuse people and I'll get a lot of letters from
people who will write and tell me that they missed Issue 6. I'm hoping Issue
6 will arrive within a week of Issue 7 and it won't be too upsetting for
most FISTS. Please help me out by telling people about the out-of -sequence
mailing if someone mentions it to you, OK?

This whole thing has been a nightmare, and I would appreciate your patience.
I realize you want your Keynotes, and I want you to have your Keynotes. On
the positive side, this new printing place is able to sort them in such a
way that we will get faster delivery.

To sign up for the FISTS update email list, pse send an email to Kathi at
fistelist at comcast.net with your name, call and FISTS number.

Thanks,
