My general routine,  especially on a popular frequency, is to throw out
an abbreviated cq,  such as <cq cq cq cq de n8ux n8ux K>.  If no
response (or no one telling me to buzz off),  I'll follow up with a longer
call, like <cq cq cq de n8ux cq cq cq cq de n8ux n8ux K>.

Of course all this is preceded with a qrl,  and judicious listening.  No, 
really.

I'd say that 75 percent of the time, I get a bite on the first salvo,  unless
I'm qrp - in which case I'm usually not cq'ing anyway.

I'm 41,  but old enough to remember the days when I could ID an op
just by hearing the cq's.  Ah, the good *old* days - the early eighties-hi!
