[Fists] From Greg WB9MII: Anyone ever use "bamboo pole" antenna?

Heya friends,
I remember my Elmer (W9JMG - an A-1 Op and 100 pct CW op) telling me that pre 
WW II guys who wanted to get on 80 or 160 and were hard up for space would 
wire wind a bamboo pole and load it up.  Sounds like an idea for a condo 
antenna.  Have any of you good folks tried that or something similar?   How'd it do?  
Was the wire space or close-wound?  Thanks 73
