I think I saw about six (6) different proposals are up for consideration.=20
This is totally nuts. I sure wish I knew what was so hard about learning a l=
ittle=20
code to get HF privileges. Even after the last fiasco when they lowered the=20
requirement to 5 WPM because that too would allow hundreds more into the hob=
by,=20
the bulk of the upgrades were advanced ops who couldn't hack the 20 wpm=20
Morse. A good many of these guys had been waiting YEARS for this. But as for=
the=20
new hams, business as usual. I don't see the great workload on VE's giving C=
W=20
tests. It's been done for years. If it is that hard W5YI's gang should maybe=
try=20
something else. Maybe that's why it's almost always his group that is under=20
investigation by the FCC for rule "deviation." BTW....remember when the medi=
cal=20
waiver was in force and guys would run around clutching at their skull=20
yelling "my brain my brain" whenever they heard a Morse signal??? Even now s=
ome are=20
claiming they can't hear etc. If you can't hear, what are ya gonna do with h=
am=20
radio??? Digital??? If you can't hear CW, you sure can't hear Morse. Due to=20
jet engines, a side arm being discharged close to one of my ears, and so for=
th,=20
I have pretty good hearing loss also, mostly high freq. I can sure hear Mors=
e=20
a heck of a lot better than SSB. But even those guys had to pass 5 WPM fer=20
cryin out loud.
=A0=A0=A0=A0 The real threat is the increase of current phone frequency allo=
cations.=20
Since we will supposedly have all these wonderful ambitious new hams, they=20
will need room to "tyalk on the raydeeo," and they will petition for more ro=
om.=20
Next will be the removal of Morse. A long time down the road???? Sure. Go ba=
ck=20
to when the requirement was being dropped to 5 WPM, and check the comments O=
N=20
THIS BOARD ALONE. Many said "Oh poo poo, the Morse requirement will never go=
=20
away," or "Well, I am not going to do anything, because they will never do a=
way=20
with Morse testing," and the favorite "It won't effect me so I am not gettin=
g=20
involved." It''s time to pay up and comment to the FCC. Or just sit and let=20
George do it like the last go around.
I posted this somewhere else:
The next thing will be the cry to eliminate Morse from the bands altogether.=
=20
The Morse challenged among us are going to have a hard time adjusting. These=
=20
guys won't know what we are saying, and will become paranoid that we are=20
talking about them. ha ha ha. Maybe it will even keep them up nights worryin=
g that=20
CW ops are looking down on, and degrading the status of the CW challenged.=20
After all, the new ops will have studied very hard to memorize the publicly=20
available test questions. The no/code folks could start research centers to=20=
study=20
the long lasting effects that the unknown and faceless code operators are=20
=A0having on their mental health, with government grants of course. Maybe it=
will even=20
drive them to the point of seeking professional medical help. New clinics=20
will open for the code challenged to go and regain the self esteem they have=
=20
lost. Study groups and workshops. Retreats. Treatment centers. Maybe even so=
me=20
sort of self awareness programs. We will foot the bill of course, because we=
as=20
the Great Society, don't want anyone to feel bad about themselves. Then, as=20=
has=20
been mentioned before, a move to RE-move Morse will arise with W5YI or one o=
f=20
his legions of apprentices, leading the charge. They will point out of=20
course, that Morse ops are degrading the hobby by sending "secret messages"=20=
about=20
others (those low life's with those keys even CALL it "code"), and are causi=
ng=20
thousands of potential new hams from joining up because of the stigma of not=
=20
knowing Morse.=A0=20
Think I will go make a CW contact now......................Al/W8FAX 2192=20
