Ken,

You should either have firewall software or a router setup with internal
firewall. You can go to www.zonealarm.com or www.blackice.com, I think they
both have a free version of a personal firewall you can try for free. You
will be surprised after you install them when you see the
attacks/prods/pokes coming in all the time.

With your workgroup setup it might be cheaper/easier to have your own
router.

Neither one will be real difficult to setup. Either one can cause problems
with a particular software pkg, but that's relatively rare. Most software
doesn't care about establishing a connection from the outside world-in, just
the other way around.
