Thankyou, Fred for your response and the info on getting
back in touch ( the URL) and onto the roster again, hi.
A few months ago, Bill Pierpont gave me permission to use
many quotes from his book as part of my transmitted CW
practice. It was going on well until Sept. 11th; I have done
essentially no sending of the stuff since then. Was doing the
40 meter CW practice transmissions primarily for the benefit
of those interested out here in KH6 land, but everyone sort
of went away after early September. For a month or so,
I was putting the practice session out simultaneously
on 20 meters, just above the W1AW frequency. However,
never really heard from anyone that it was useful to them, hi.
Someone is now out with very low cost CD's with loads of
W1AW CW practice tracks several month's worth on one CW!
You can select the speed you want to practice, etc. So that
demodulated me also, hi.
The most interesting chapter to me in Pierpont's book
is that about the "Candler System", which I studied way
back in the late 40's, hi. Candler had ads in
every ARRL Handbook issue in those days, and probably
in QST also, I don't recall. I used the "Instructograph"
machine with paper tapes when I learned the Morse
code. I just rented the machine and tapes; was too
expensive for me at that time to buy one!
Spent many an hour with that thing and wishing
I could make paper tapes of the so called "high speed
words/phrases" within the Candler System. I have
tried several times to obtain copies again of those
few pages in each Candler "lesson" which had the
specific "high speed" words. However, Pierpont has
lists of the most common words in the language, etc.
which I used in my CW practice transmissions. Probably
some of that might have come from Candler's stuff --
I don't know.
Anyway, I am rambling. Thanks again for the info about
getting back in touch with Fists. I last saw Nancy at Dayton,
maybe three or so years ago now; sort of the last time
I was "in touch". She snapped my picture at that time,
so maybe it is/was among the "mug" shots, hi.
Found the e-mail reflector subscription opportunity at qth.net
on the web, so that was a start to contacting the group again.
I do look forward to Bill's book in printed form again;
missed getting a copy when last it was out.
