[FieldDay] Generators and UPS

The UPS might be responding to distortion in the expected sine wave of
the generator output. I also use UPSs of a slightly larger capacity (APC
SmartUPS 1400), and the dropout senssitivity is adjustable either
through a dip switch or through software. Do you have that capability in
your unit?
You're right; they are very sensitive - they have to be to sense an
impending dropout and come online very fast.
Try this:
Borrow a larger UPS if possible.
Make sure the batteries are hot-swappable and not connected to the line
in any way.
Remove or disconnect the internal batteries.
Add external lead-acid (automobile or marine type) batteries in series
if necessary to make up the original battery voltage.
Keep the batteries charged from the generator 115v output, and a husky
battery charger.
Connect the load to the UPS as usual. (Don't connect the UPS line cord).

Or:
If you don't need 115v power, forget the ups & run the station on 12
batteries alone. If you need to run computers, use laptops and 12
adapters.
