[FARReps] Draft FAR minutes, Nov 2005

Not a correction to the minutes, just an update since I didn't make last
night's meeting.

I have been appointed  Division Staff Officer for Communications (SO-CM)
for Division 7, Middle Chesapeake, of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the
coming  year. The Auxiliary has opportunities for Amateur Radio operators
including designation of fixed and mobile radio facilities operating on
non-ham frequencies using MARS-modified equipment, and radio watchstanding
at Coast Guard stations. There are some annoying security clearance
requirements and some interesting specialty training requirements.

Prince Georges County REACT is in the process of replacing our General
Mobile Radio Service repeater atop Doctors Hospital with a new solid-state
repeater. The fate of our old repeater is undecided. It still works, and
could be installed at some other location after refurbishment if a location
is available. GMRS provides similar propogation to that of the Amateur 440
MHz band., with a power limit of 50 watts. Equipment certification
requirements are similar to those for the Land Mobile Radio Service, so
equipment tends to be somewhat more expensive than Amateur Radio, and less
frequency-agile. Most of our members now use both GMRS and Amateur radio
for maximum flexibility.
