Fellow FARC Members:

As discussed at our meeting on Monday, 18 March, it is time to begin making
plans for participation in Field Day 2013. Last year, we had a nice location
in a parking deck at Frederick Memorial Hospital, but there seemed to be
some interest in trying something that would both create a more "outdoorsy"
experience for our members and afford easy access and high visibility for
the public. I'm not familiar enough with the parks around Frederick to make
recommendations, but would be happy to do some legwork to scope out
prospects or investigate permitting options (e.g. Gambrill State Park,
Pinecliff Park). Jeff Fishman mentioned that we might also be able to use
some space his family owns near the Golden Mile (on Waverly Drive). Any
thoughts?

Information about Field Day is available here
<http://www.arrl.org/field-day> .

It may be instructive to look at the simple planning page set up by the
Randallstown Amateur Radio Club (http://icengineering.com/n3ic/rarc/fd13/),
which sets up a class 2A station each year at the Washington Monument State
Park.

Hopefully we can plan an activity that will afford us a chance to socialize,
mentor new hams (and give some a first-time chance to work on HF), develop
skills (station setup, safety, contest operating, etc.), and give the club
some exposure to the public and prospective members. It would be wonderful
if we could plan some sort of class and testing session ("ham in a day")
that we could offer to interested guests.

I look forward to hearing everybody's thoughts. It looks like this may be
among the topics of discussion at our next meeting
(http://frederickarc.org/?p=419), but I think it will be helpful to
circulate some ideas before then.

73,

Steven, W3SFG
