[FARC] FARC "Approved" Minutes for March 19, 2012

Fox Hunting is NOT for finding lost persons UNLESS
they have a transmitter with them that they are keeping on for the purpose of
using it to help people with DF (Direction Finding) radio equipment to locate
them & their transmitter. The term "Fox Hunting" is really used
for the practice of placing a hidden transmitter someplace and then having a
group of people with receivers try to locate, and be the first to find, the
transmitter. It is usually on for a minute and off for five or something like
that.
Fox Hunting skills can be used to find/locate
a transmitter that is (usually) interfering with a lagit transmitter, or for
finding people who have an emergency transmitter with them, which will NOT be
in the amateur radio bands.
But, in general, the people we will probably
try to locate in our county, either wandered away, or went hiking & fell
& can't get up. They will NOT have such an emergency
transponder/transmitter with them, and almost certainly they will not have an
amateur radio transmitter with them either. They might have their cell phone
& it might or might not be able to get to a cell site from their location
so they might or might not be able to to place a call.
Few, very few, have an amateur radio with
them, but usually if they do they get rescued and we read about it in QST. The
vast majority do not and then it's a crap shoot as to finding them in time.
This is NOT Fox Hunting, this is Search and Rescue (S&R). Once found by an
amateur we might be able to use Fox Hunting skills to locate the ham who made
the find using his transmissions to locate on. But, I'd hope that by now any
ham engaged in S&R will have a GPS with them and can simply relay, or
transmit, their Lat/Lon coordinates.

I've been
interested in trying Fox Hunting for some time as a way to get kids
interested in ham radio. I've purchased one MicroFox transmitter
(http://www.byonics.com/mf) and some attenuator kits
(http://www.west.net/~marvin/k0ov.htm) so the boys and I can make three
tape measure Yagis. We probably won't be able to do it until school gets
out in six weeks.
Although Jim is right that radio direction finding
would certainly be a valuable service to offer, I have to admit, I
bought the equipment only because it looked like it would be fun to try.
After the boys and I build the tape measure Yagis, maybe we can have a
practice fox hunt during one of the meetings?
