All,

The wpaNBEMS(Western Pennsylvania Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Service)
usually starts out using Olivia 8/500 and the net times are:

Regular net is Sunday 1000L 3.5835 and set your audio cursor center on
1Khz.

Regular ragchew net is Monday night, 2000L on 3.5835 and I will be glad to
bring my set up and get on and demo the net from the radio club site some
meeting night if its close to a window where I can run my antenna cable to
the inside and set up my antenna outside.

You can use what 'they' call 'acoustical coupling' and that is where you
hold your hf mic near the computer speaker and then when you hit the
software tx command the computer speaker will emit those weird sounds and
you can adj the audio out and mic position so you get about 15 or 20 watts
out. No audio compression is used, it distorts.

You can use a computer mic to the mic in, of course, and hold it up to the
hf rig speaker on rx and receive hf digi that way.

Those are inexpensive ways to get on hf digi to see if you want to invest
in or build a hard wired interface. I have a couple I have build and I will
be glad to help anyone that would like to build their own interface.

Its the same interface that works with psk31 and other digi modes. I use
built in vox on the one radio so I don't need the serial port for PTT and on
the other radio, the Kenwood TS 50, it has 8 V at the mic jack so I built a
747 op amp to amplify and detect the digi tones and that then turned on a
2N2222 transistor for PTT so that was my vox circuit but QST has a much
nicer one in a few issues back, a board you can get for $5 and it works at
lower levels in that the one I built so I am using that one now instead of
the one I built. I have been mobile hf digi ( not while driving, my wife was
driving !!) and, also, just in the driveway and that is kind of neat except
my belly and the laptop want to occupy the same space!

I usually use FLDIGI software, and you can put that into google and get the
info and download that program. Ham Radio Deluxe is great and so is MixW and
there are other programs of course.

If you download any of the software programs you can click on the tx button
and hear, on the computer speaker, what the different modes sound like.
