Colleagues = Have you taken a look around the HamFest circuit
for Kurt N. Sterba's compendia of his columns in WorldRadio? I
can't offer you mine; I gave 'em to KC2IET in NY to help him
get started. There are two (maybe three) paperback volumes of
his experiences and technical discussions. I do not remember
a single instance in which he found/felt that the ARRL Antenna
Book was incorrect.

Krusty Old Kurt reported successful DX loading up an aluminum
ladder at one time and two abandoned grocery carts (dipole) in
a weekend DX contest.

KZ3F (maybe still in Montgomery Village?) reported DXCC success
with four dipoles fastened to the *inside* of a backyard wooden
fence.

Kurt's repeated assertion is, "If it will conduct, it will also
radiate." (Obviously a tuner is necessary in many instances.)

I've energized a pair of Slinkies on 40M & 80M, with moderate
success. If I'd had a couple more days to haul 'em higher, I
might've gone beyond "moderate" success.
