[FARC] PKT Info

Anthony, KB3ONM Kirk here. I haven't found anything new on the web in regard to Packet, not even the 2000 reference you mention here. But probably for beginners, the best Packet site out on the web is from Larry Kenney, circa 1995.

The link for Larry Kenney's site is:
 http://www.choisser.com/packet/

This site actually is an online beginners course in Packet radio and is what I used to get started. With the help of myself, W3FDK, KB3OMO, W3ICF, KA3HJC, N8AAY, and NE3R, we can get you rolling on Packet in no time.

Yes Packet is old and you have to be wary of older Packet documentation because a lot of the nationwide Packet network facilities and features in regard to Ham radio no longer exist. I found this out the hard way by trying to use the ARRL Ham Radio Operations Manual copyright 1991. However Packet radio is still "alive" in Frederick County and other Maryland counties.

I like Packet just because it is old and doesn't require the installation and configuration of buggy, complicated, Ham software to get up and running although you can use many multimode digital software packages for Packet if you wish. If you have Windows XP or some older operating system I recommend you use Windows HyperTerminal.

Hi, don't mean to break in on the topic here but, I just found the TNC connections diagram for my 2 meter radio (Alinco ALR-22T) and I am interested in getting into packet communications. Are there any good online (modern) references for packet? Everything I am googling seems to be pre-2000 and not geared towards the newbie... Any information that someone could send me would be great too...

Thanks,

Anthony

Note to Packet users, the N8YIB Western Maryland Packet network appears to be available from node FDK now. Connect to nodes FDK, then to WVLINE, and then to BBSYIB to access the N8YIB BBS.

Some Packet users depending on their location may be able to connect to node WVLINE direct, then to node ALLCO, and then to BBSYIB or connect to nodes WVLINE direct, then to node CUMB, and then to node BBSYIB. Try and use whatever works for you.

In addition to the N8YIB BBS, there are several DX Packetcluster nodes available from nodes WVLINE, CUMB, and ALLCO if you're into that.

Disclaimer. Your Packet performance may vary.

Still running a Packet net and ragchew on Saturday nights 9:00 p.m. on node FDK in "Talk Mode."

  Happy Holidays everyone.
