Joe,
I used to do that allot for 40m & I believe I did have a set for 80m but found it
not as good as I had hoped. These are extremely short for 80m but they did work and
I believe I was able to get into MEPN & the MDD/MSN with them during SETs. I then
used a real 80m dipole on PVC pipe 20' up at the center & 12' up at the ends which
worked much better, once I found the short.
Last, let me say that it doesn't cost all that much to buy a pair & the mounting
hardware (less if you can make it or make-due, which I did) so give it a go. I'm a
very strong believer in experimenting because you-never-know, no matter who gives
you advice from "years of experience" it is probably not experience in your exact
situation & you won't know unless you try.
By the way, I kept the pair of 40m sticks & I still use one mobile for Field day if
I can not go anywhere, the pair have not been used in years. I found the 80m I kept,
had problems when run mobile using a mag-mount but it did work.
Good-luck & let us know how it works out!
