Here's some info on a new EMCOMM and Ham Radio group that's forming in
Damascus, MD.
They'll be doing EchoLink operations via the 146.73 W3ICF repeater on
Saturday, 7/14 from the Damascus VFD station, to introduce kids to Ham
Radio.
Any interested Hams are also welcome to stop by and say hello and get a
look at the VHF/UHF station they've installed. (If you go, the best
place to park is probably down behind the McDonalds, in the Safeway
shopping center.)

A group of HAMs have formed a Club in Damascus named Damascus Emergency
Communications Team (DECT). As the name states, were mainly focused on
Emergency Communications, and have been working very closely with the
Damascus Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD) to act as their communications
backup in the event of an emergency. The DVFD Fire Chief has stated he
wants the ability to activate our organization, and has purchase two HAM
radios that operate in the 2 meter/440 MHz bands. These, together with
Base Antennas and backup power, are situated at the Fire Department and
DECT has performed several practice drills with them. Please see our web
site
(http://mysite.verizon.net/vzesbz9n/damascusemergencycommunicationsteam/)
for further information about our organization, or call Doug Noble
WA3VKW, our President, at 301-414-0228.
This Saturday, July 14^th , the town of Damascus is holding its annual
Celebrate Damascus Days event (see
http://www.fitness4youdamascus.com/celebratedamascus.html). DECT will be
part of this celebration, and we will have a table with radios and
brochures. As most of the people that come to this fair are kids and
families, we have set up our table aimed at children, and will offer
free Jimmy Cones to those who will come and talk to someone overseas
using our radios. In addition to our table, there will be games and a
maze for children, as well as other prizes and free raffles.
Please come to Damascus this Saturday and see the entire celebration, as
well as drop by the Fire Department and see us. Wed really enjoy
talking to you and entertaining your kids.
