If you are in the MDC section or nearby, you might want to check in to the
Maryland Emergency Phone Net on 3820 kHz daily at 1800 local time. The MEPN
is a National Traffic System, NTS, net, but you don't have to handle traffic
to check in, there is usually time for a round of comments. It isn't that
much different than the regular ARES nets you'll hear on the two meter
repeaters, with the exception that it is state wide, the signals vary with
conditions, and there are no curtsey beeps.

After checking into a few nets, if there is traffic for the area, offer to
take it, emergency communications is often about getting traffic from one
place to another, and the NTS has been doing that for a long time, most of
the stuff is routine, but the occasional practice keeps us familiar with the
procedures so we know what we are doing when handling the emergency and
priority traffic.

Don't forget the Maryland Slow Net on 3563 kHz daily at 1730 local time, if
you've never checked into a CW net before, this is the place to start.
